The birthplace of democracy, the Athenian Agora was a marketplace. The marketplace in the Hellenistic city was the medium through which ideas could be exchanged and where people could challenge each other to debate. It became the center of government and the law courts were found here. In the late first century BC a concert hall was built in the center of the Athenian Forum, now a city under Roman rule. Shown here is the Forum of Athens before sunset with lively foot traffic and good business. The illustration is based on extensive archaeological excavations in the area and the model exhibited in the recently rebuilt Stoa of Attalus on the edge of the Agora. The viewer of the scene stands above the NE corner of the doric temple of Hephaestos.
