"But the fourth enclosure wall of the temple, which was on the south, had indeed gates in its middle, as also it had the basilica with three isles which reached in length from the east valley to the one on the west . . . and this basilica deserves to be mentioned more than any other under the sun." (Josephus: Jewish Antiquities, Book 15 Ch. 11, 5.4.11) Pesach (Passover) pilgrims crowd even the Basilica on the Temple Mount for eight days. They would arrive from all corners of the Roman Empire to celebrate one of three major annual Jewish festivals, the others being Shavuot (Feast of Weeks) and Sukkoth (the Festival of Booths). In the construction and decoration of the Temple Mount no expense was spared by King Herod, the wealthiest man in the region and the scale of the project was monumental. While the illustration attempts to point out the grandeur of the architecture, it adheres to the evidence we have about the Temple Mount in the 1st century AD.
