"He upset the tables of the money changers . . ." (Mark 11:15) Jesus infuriates the Jewish authorities when he causes disturbance by overturning the tables of the money changers and pigeon sellers, berating them for turning the Temple into a place of commerce. Flying in the air (among other denominations) are the Tyrian shekels that every Israelite male over the age of twenty was required to pay as tithe (annual tax) for the upkeep of the Temple. The large, colonnaded and open temple court surrounding the walled inner Temple proper was a vast market place where a variety of things were sold. I imagined the money changers could afford to rent space in the shady colonnades and I placed this scene there.
