The building of the new Jewish Temple on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem was one of the largest construction projects ever undertaken in the Roman Empire. Jerusalem and the Second Temple reaffirmed itself as the focal point of Jewish consciousness and identity as one nation under God. For Christians, Jesus' last days unfolded here. Even the remains of the Temple Mount are monumental and its utter destruction by the victorious Roman legions still left ample evidence in place for researchers 2000 years later to recreate it in detail.
