"After this he (Paul) left Athens and went to Corinth. There he met a Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus and his wife Priscilla . . . Paul approached them and, because he was of the same trade, he made his home with them; they were tent makers and Paul worked with them." (Acts 18:1) The most populous and cosmopolitan city in ancient Greece, Corinth was several times larger than Athens in the 1st century AD. Paul arrived here in 51 AD and stayed for a year and a half working as a tent maker and preaching in local synagogues on the sabbaths. Paul would have seen this early morning market at the center of Corinth as he lived nearby.
