"David took up his residence in the stronghold and called it the City of David. He built up the city around it, starting at the Millo, working inwards." (2 Samuel 5:9) Some of the Bible's most memorable narratives unfolded here. This painting is based on photos I took on the hillside facing the City of David early in the morning. The area is now the Palestinian village of Silwan and is completely built up as is the western hill (Mishneh). Referring to old photos of the same area I recreated the look of the slope and the hill to the west as it would have been in the time of Solomon which I imagine as having been an early suburb as the population spilled over the walls after Jerusalem had become a capital. Using the latest excavation plans I traced the line of the walls and the newly discovered massive fortifications around the Gihon Spring and drew up the elevation. Having consulted the results of Eilat Mazar's recent finds, the "Large Stone Structure", I placed it at its proper place. If her interpretation of the remains is correct, she discovered King David's palace. The newly built Temple of Solomon is positioned where the Dome of the Rock is visible from this point of view.
