"And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran, his son's son and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram's wife and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees to go into the land of Canaan . . ." (Genesis 11:31) This reconstruction was made possible by the thorough excavations of Sir Leonard Woolley in the 1920s and 30s who revealed the foundations of the entire temple complex and the adjacent palace buildings of the great city of Ur allowing us to gain a comprehensive picture of the administrative center of one of Sumer's most powerful city-states. The smaller of the city's two harbors is visible in the background beyond which agricultural land and marshes stretch to the horizon in which today is southern Iraq. The ziggurat, or temple tower, of Ur is the best preserved one of all the abandoned ancient sites in Sumer. It was the focus of the central temple complex of Ur dedicated to Nanna, the Moon god. Adjacent to it the royal palace and the royal burial ground was found which yielded a spectacular treasure trove of gold objects and artifacts of all kinds, some of which is on exhibit in the museum of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
