"Three times a year all your males must come into the presence of the Lord your God in the place which he will choose: at the pilgrim-feast of Pesach (Unleavened bread), of Shavuot (Weeks) and of Sukkoth (Booths). No one may come into the presence of the Lord without an offering; each of you is the bring such a gift as he can in proportion to the blessing which the Lord you God has given you." (Deuteronomy 16:16) The korbanot (Temple offerings) involved the slaughter of the consecrated animal and the capturing of some of its blood in a small vessel (foreground of illustration). A priest would carry the blood to sprinkle it on the corner of the altar (left center). Priests would cut up the meat and prepare it for burning some portions of it on the altar and roasting other cuts for ceremonial consumption by the people who brought it, while they would retain some cuts of the meat for the themselves as payment for the services.
