"Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot, the son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, Abram's wife, and they set out from Ur of the Chaldees for Canaan." (Genesis 11:31) Porters unload merchandise from distant lands in the main harbor of Ur, one of Sumer's wealthiest cities. Known in the Bible as Abraham's birthplace, Ur achieved renown in 1920's when its entire temple-palace complex and a large residential area were excavated revealing a highly complex and sophisticated society. Beyond the harbor the ziggurat and the temple of the Moon god can be seen in the centre of the city. Today Ur's ziggurat is the best preserved Sumerian structure in Iraq.
