"Oh, Ashur, rod of my anger, in whose hand my fury is a staff. I send him against an ungodly nation and I give him charge over the people of my wrath to take the spoil, to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mud of the streets." (Isaiah 10:5-6) Ashur was the capital of Assyria and it remained the empire's religious center after Assyrian kings moved the royal residence to Niniveh and Nimrod (Kalhu). The illustrations shows a partial view of the city in the 9th century BC standing on the roof of the temple of Ashur with the Ziggurat and royal palaces in the background.
