"The temple servants lived on the hill of Ophel and Ziha and Gishpa were in charge of them." (Nehemiah 11:21) Between the northern part of the City of David and the southern wall of the Temple Mount lies a narrow ridge called the Ophel. The well preserved remains of a city gate, massive fortifications and storage rooms were excavated on its eastern edge by Eilat Mazar recently. The gate complex dates to the time or shortly after King Solomon.
