"Then the king of Gebal spoke to me saying: 'On what business have you come?' I said to him: 'I came to acquire timber for the great noble boat of Amun-Re, king of the Gods. What your father did, what your father's father did and you will do it too.' So I said to him. He said to me: 'True, they did it. If you pay me for doing it, I will do it too. My ancestors did this business because Pharaoh had sent six ships laden with the goods of Egypt and they had been unloaded into my storehouses. You, what have you brought for me?" (from the tale of the Egyptian high official Wen-Amun, around 1100 BC) Logging in their backyard was the main source of income for the kings of Gebal on the coast of today's Lebanon as the mountain range behind the city provided a seemingly inexhaustible store of cedar timber which could be floated down the coastline to a port of destination. Gebal was sacred to the Egyptians whose Pharaos all sent gifts to the temple of Osiris-Horus. Extensive archaeological work in Byblos made it possible to recreate the appearance of this important Phoenician port city with confidence. A number of ancient temples dating to the third millennium occupied the central area complete with a large well and a sacred pool. The illustration is based on photographs taken at the site which is now an archaeological park.
