"Now the Valley of the Cheesemongers, as it was called, . . . distinguished the hill of the upper city from that of the the lower and extended as far down as [the pool of] Siloam." (Josephus: The Jewish War, Book 5, Ch. 4.1.140) Not only did Herod the Great rebuild the Temple and the entire Temple Mount in the 1st century, he also widened and repaved the major north-south street that ran down the middle of Jerusalem. The street followed the course of the Tyropoeon Valley along the west side of the Temple Mount and the City of David. It ended at the bottom of the hill where the recently excavated Pool of Siloam served as mikvah for observant Jews. People approaching Jerusalem from Bethlehem and Hebron heading up to the Temple would take this street. A part of the pavement of this street in the area shown here came to light during excavations. The architectural style of the houses lining the street follow well preserved examples from Roman cities of the 1st century AD. The appearance of the southern wall of the Temple Mount and the Royal Stoa is now more or less a matter of scholarly consensus regarding its main features.
