"She then let them down through the window by rope because her house was right up against the city wall." (Joshua 2:15) In the Middle Bronze Age Yericho was protected by an inner wall made of mud brick. Outside of it the lower city sloped towards the outer wall that was surrounded by a steeply sloping high revetment wall at the base made of field stones. Houses were built right against the outer wall as in other cities throughout the Middle East houses shared a wall with the outer fortifications of a walled city. The rocky edge of the Judean Desert looms behind the lush oasis of Jericho which boasts 12000 years of continuous occupation. The Bible describes how, led by Joshua, the Israelites entered the promised land nearby and made Jericho their first conquest in Canaan. Recent archaeological work made it clear how it was possible for Rahab, a resident of Jericho whose house shared a wall with the city wall, to allow the Israelite spies to escape through her window. This reconstruction is inspired by the new findings.
