"The land was stricken by a famine so severe that Abraham went down to Egypt to live there for a time."(Genesis 12:10) This Egyptian tomb painting is the only surviving depiction of a Canaanite nomadic clan, such as Abraham's, Isaac's or Jacob's, that actually dates to the period of the patriarchs. Discovered in the tomb of Khnumhotep II, vizier of the Pharaoh Amenemhet III, it is now in terrible condition and barely visible. I endeavored to create the best possible copy relying on old photographs. The wall painting is useful in visualizing nomadic groups from Canaan that sojourned in Egypt in the Middle Bronze Age. Notice that it is not camels that nomads used at the time but donkeys, as it is attested from other sources as well.
