"...He set sail, the Father set sail, Enki, the God of Wisdom set sail for the Underworld ..." (The Huluppu Tree. A Sumerian myth. 3rd millennium BC) The ancient Sumerian document called "Sumerian king list" names Eridu as the first city in the world. At its heart, on a vast platform rose the double Temple of Abzu, or fresh water, abode of Enki who personified wisdom and civilization. Excavations in Eridu revealed that the earliest strata under the temple platform indeed goes back to hoary antiquity, around 5300 BC. This illustration is a ground view of my other image of Eridu showing the early city in aerial view. Early Sumerian cylinder seal impressions make it clear that that reed boats were the mode of water transport in the archaic days of Eridu so I placed Enki's veiled effigy on one. In the background loom the twin temples of Enki and Ninhursag of Eridu.
