"After spending eight or ten days in Jerusalem, he (Festus) went down to Caesarea, and next day he took his seat in court and ordered Paul to be brought before him." (Acts 25:6) Caesaria Maritima is known in the New Testament as the city where the Apostle Paul stood trial on charges of fomenting rebellion during the pilgrim festival of Sukkoth (Pentecost) in 52 AD. The Roman procurator put Paul in custody in Caesarea and he remained in prison for two years awaiting trial. Some of Paul's Epistles were written while being imprisoned in Caesarea. Herod the Great's most ambitious construction project next to rebuilding the Temple in Jerusalem, in 13 BC Caesarea became the the capital of the Roman Province of Iudaea. The governor of Judea, Pontius Pilatus, who conducted Jesus' trial, had his seat in Caesarea, and his name was discovered there on a stone block along with his title. Created with Dr. Jonathan Reed of U of La Verne.
