"It was at this time that Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee . . ." (Mark 1:9) Known as Jesus' home in his childhood years, Nazareth is now estimated to have had only a few dozen families living simple lives. As the illustration shows, grapes were harvested and treaded in square rock cut depressions of which remains were found at Nazareth. There were also olive trees and dove cotes and small plots of land in the valley to grow wheat and barley. Every family probably had a few sheep and goats to supplement their diet and to provide wool. The "big city" of Sepphoris, capital of Galilee, was just an hour walk from here. Created with Dr. Jonathan Reed, U. of La Verne.
