"Nebuchadnezzar took into exile the people of Yerushalem, the officers and all the fighting men, ten thousand in number, together with all the craftsmen and smiths; only the poorest class of people was left. He deported King Yehoiachin to Babylon. He also took into exile from Yerushalem to Babylon the king's mother and his wives, his eunuchs, and the foremost men of the land." ( 2 Kings 25:14) In this illustration Jewish exiles gather in one of the large courtyards of Nabuchadnezzar's palace in Babylon after their deportation from Jerusalem in 586 BC waiting for their assignment in their new home. A century of German excavations in Babylon produced thousands of bricks glazed with lapis lazuli from the palace area (as well as the Ishtar Gate). German scholars reassembled these bricks to recreate a section of the facade in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin. This illustration is based on that exhibit, the excavation plans they published and their proposed elevation drawings.
