"Abraham set seven ewe lambs apart, and when Abimelech asked him why he did that, he said: Accept these seven lambs from me as a proof that I dug this well.' This is why that place was called Be'er-sheva. Because there the two of them swore an oath. (Genesis 21:28) The numerous wells in the area around Be'er-sheva in the vast semi desert region of the Negev Desert mad habitation possible at least as early as the Chalcolithic period, around 4000 BC. Be'er-sheva is the one city most closely associated with the biblical patriarchs although no city of any kind existed there at the time in the Middle Bronze Age (1800-1550 BC) Abraham settled in the region and his son Isaac lived most of his life around Be'er-sheva. Jacob was also born there and spent most of his life in the area. Jacob saw a dream of a stairway to heaven after he left Beersheba. After the Israelites settled in Canaan the city became the southern boundary of Judah. The sons of the prophet Samuel acted as judges in Beersheba. The prophet Elijah escaped here when Jezebel tried to kill him. Excavations uncovered almost the entire site. A small area of the original Israelite settlement was revealed as well and this illustration is based on the finds.
