Jews from all over the Roman Empire came to the Jerusalem Temple to present their offerings three times a year, if they could make it. Wishing to enter the inner courts of the Temple from the south, a Jewish male would first immerse himself in one of many public mikva'ot, or ritual pools, at the southern gates of the Temple Mount. Then he would make his way with his sacrificial animal up the grand staircase to the so-called Double Gate and, crossing under the huge basilica through a long passage way, he would emerge into daylight again on the vast platform of the Temple. This rendering gives an impression of the motley throng, Jewish, Greek, Syrian, Egyptian, Roman and others from the eastern Roman Empire and beyond who had business in the Temple against the formidable backdrop of the basilica's wall. Roman guards are shown posted on top of the stairs and by the gate for crowd control.
