". . . All these countries I carried off. The conquered population, oxen, sheep, the possessions of the land, I brought away to Hattusha. Now when I destroyed the land of Assuwa, I came back home to Hattusha, and as booty, 10,000 foot-soldiers and 600 teams of horses for chariots together with the charioteer nobility I brought to Hattusha and I settled them in Hattusha. . ." (Annals, obv. 22'-36', transl. by Garstang and Gurney, 1959 -122) Illustration, looking south, based on an aerial photo belonging to the German Archaeological Institute who conducts excavations there. The line of the walls in the foreground is clearly discernible from the photo. Elsewhere I projected the intricate lines of fortifications from excavation plans onto the landscape. Punctuated by rocky protrusions, the city of Hattusha slanted to the north and was probably crowded with houses throughout. It is shown late afternoon.
