This is a "rolled out" drawing of the relief carved onto the side of a vase found in the Sumerian city of Uruk. The vase is the oldest sophisticated artifact to surface from the oldest city in the world. The three bands of images running around the vase depict the central event in the life of the city: the annual ritual marriage of the king and the goddess Inanna, Uruk's protective deity. The procession of the groom (the king) and his attendants toward the bride begin on the bottom register as they progress from the fields on the river side, driving livestock and bearing baskets of produce from the land as bridal gifts. In the upper register the king approaches and greets the goddess personified by his wife or the priestess who stands waiting in the gates of her temple-storehouse of abundance.
