"And David and all the house of Israel played before YHVH with all kinds of instruments made of cypress-wood and with harps and with string instruments and with tambourines and with sistrum shakers and with cymbals . . . And David danced before YHVH with all his might and David was girded with a linen ephod. And David and all the house of Israel brought up the Ark of YHVH with shouting and with the sound of the horn". (2 Samuel 6:5 and 14-15) The scene of this painting is set in the Kidron Valley just south of the City of David looking north towards the city. Because of the winter rains the deep and narrow ravine of the Kidron collects all the water and run off soil from the nearby hills making it a lush and fertile area. David and his company are reported in 2 Samuel 6:2 to have walked with the ark from Ba'alei Yehuda towards Jerusalem stopping over at the house of Avinadab and at the house of Oved-Edom. The instruments, clothing and hair styles shown here are referenced from 9th and 8th century BC Assyrian and Neo Hittite reliefs depicting musicians and commoners. The women are portrayed in an attitude of nomadic qashqai women at a wedding celebration. The ephod King David wears is based on the description in Exodus 28:6-8.
