The sacred site of Olympia in southern Greece is where the olympic games began in honor of Zeus and were held in every four years. The first recorded game is dated to 776 BC but it is believed contestants from Greek cities had been gathering there long before that. The enormous ivory and gold cult statue of Zeus enthroned in the centrally located Temple of Zeus was one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world. The illustration depicts the sacred grounds looking north during the morning hours. The hippodrome for chariot races and the stadium for foot races were to the east, outside the picture.
