"The city hangs s strangely that it looks as if it would fall down upon itself, so sharp is it at the top. (Josephus: The Jewish War, Book 4, Ch.1.7) Gamla overlooks the Sea of Galilee from the Golan Heights and it is known as a bastion of Jewish resistance to the Roman forces in the revolt of 66-70 AD. Gamla became a symbol of taking a determined stand against overwhelming odds like the Jews did at Masada by the Dead Sea. The defenders fiercely fought the Roman onslaught to the end when finally the town walls were breached and all its pious inhabitants perished fighting or cast themselves down from the cliff.
