"The city hangs s strangely that it looks as if it would fall down upon itself, so sharp is it at the top. It is exposed to the south and its southern mount, which reached to am immense height, was in the nature of a citadel to the city; and above that was a precipice, not walled about, but extending itself to an immense depth. (Josephus: The Jewish War, Book 4, Ch.1.7) Gamla overlooks the Sea of Galilee from the Golan Heights and it is known as a bastion of Jewish resistance to the Roman forces in the revolt of 66-70 AD. Gamla became a symbol of taking a determined stand against overwhelming odds like the Jews did at Masada by the Dead Sea. The defenders fiercely fought the Roman onslaught to the end when finally the town walls were breached and all its pious inhabitants perished fighting or cast themselves down from the cliff. Created with Dr. Jonathan Reed, U. of La Verne.
