Persian guards flank one of many gates that gave access to the Tower of Babel in the center of the city. Now destroyed to its very foundations, the Ziggurat in Babylon was once the tallest structure ever built in Mesopotamia. The temple perched on top was dedicated to Babylon's main deity Marduk who was thought to descend into his earthly palace on ceremonial occasions.
